Patients with oral mucosal diseases typically consult a dermatologist, family doctor or dentist, but these groups are often unfamiliar with acute and chronic mucosal disorders and lesions within the oral cavity. This book aims to help all specialists by providing: - an introductory guide to oral anatomical features
- an outline of investigations and procedures appropriate for oral dermatology
- a differential diagnosis guide based on morphology and location
- a detailed assessment of all common oral mucosal conditions, using a consistent presentation including definition, aetiology, clinical features, investigations, treatment options, prevention strategies and prognosis
- hundreds of full colour clinical photographs to accompany the descriptions.
The book provides an easy to access guide that helps readers quickly find the information needed to confidently assess symptoms and signs of lesions within and around the mouth. It is targeted at practising dermatologists and dermatologists in training, but will also appeal to otolaryngologists, dental practitioners, pharmacists, and dental nurses. Learn more and order here.

Description
Dermatology residency is generally lacking in clinical recognition and treatments for oral diseases. This book is a pictorial atlas of tongue, lip, and oral mucosal conditions and discusses differential diagnoses and treatments. |
Purpose
The purpose of this book is to fill the educational gap in diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases so dermatologists can help their patients with these problems. |
Audience
The audience is dermatologists. |
Features
The book covers the natural history, causes, and treatments of oral mucosal diseases from a practical perspective. The book covers anatomical features of the oral cavity, diagnostic procedures, and differential diagnosis of oral mucosal lesions. It continues on to discuss developmental and genetic oral mucosal diseases as well as infections and inflammatory diseases. The goal of dermatologists is to master the clinical findings of oral diseases rather than refer these cases to ENTs. To this end, the clinical photographs are of good quality. However, the book does not include photographs of every entity discussed, which is a shortfall. Without an image of verruciform xanthoma on the tongue, reading only a description of its appearance may not allow diagnosis. A discussion of Magic MouthWash (a prescription mouthwash that can help with sores caused by chemotherapy as well as other conditions) and the authors' preferences for compounding this medication would be interesting and is not mentioned. |
Assessment
Overall, I found this to be a useful reference to learn about oral medicine and it lends itself as a quick resource should dermatologists need to peruse photographs of patients' oral lesions. |
