Description
The book covers clinical microbiology and its subtopics. The previous edition was published in 2019. The book provides charts, tables, color pictures, and algorithms to aid comprehension. |
Purpose
The book's purpose is to provide updated information on all areas of microbiology. The updated book provides information from worldwide contributors essential for the clinical laboratory based on lessons learned from the COVID pandemic. |
Audience
The book's easy-to-read format is appropriate for students, clinical microbiologists, and medical laboratory scientists. The book meets the need of these individuals by not only explaining basic techniques and theory but also providing explanations of recent technologies and updating taxonomic changes. The authors and editors are experts in their fields and recognized by the scientific community. |
Features
The book begins with an overview of functions of a clinical laboratory and how to obtain and process specimens for accurate results. It then moves to identifying common and uncommon microorganisms. The section on performing susceptibilities provides information on common methods as well as methods not routinely used in smaller clinical laboratories. Descriptions of testing are written so they can be understood and then explained to other individuals outside the laboratory. The chapter updates that will be available through ClinMicroNow.org are an additional asset between publications. |
Assessment
The previous edition of this book was in two larger volumes which made it difficult to handle. Splitting this edition into four volumes makes it easier for users. The updated information including COVID-19 and other emerging pathogens, recent technologies for testing, and updated taxonomic changes are important for clinical laboratory staff and warrant the updated version. I find all four volumes of the book to be very well written and extremely helpful as a resource for the clinical laboratory. |
