Description
The author begins by acknowledging the challenges associated with arriving at the correct DSM-5-TR diagnosis from various symptoms that patients often present with when seeking psychiatric care. This unique book offers clinicians a valuable resource to improve skills in formulating comprehensive differential diagnoses. It guides clinicians through various considerations which must be explored before arriving at a diagnosis. |
Purpose
This book's purpose is to help clinicians improve their skills in creating comprehensive differential diagnoses. It provides a logically staged process that guides the clinician step-by-step as they consider the multiple elements involved in correct diagnostic formulation. As diagnostic clarification is essential to effective treatment in the field of psychiatry, this book helps prescribers as well as psychotherapists correctly diagnose patients and make timely selections of evidence-based treatments. |
Audience
This book can be helpful for various audiences. Medical students in their psychiatry rotation, graduate physicians entering their psychiatry residency, and students as well as graduate psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners can benefit from this text. It can also be useful for students in mental health fields, including clinical mental health counseling, social work, and psychology. Libraries at institutions that support the aforementioned programs and hospital medical libraries will find this book invaluable. |
Features
The book begins by discussing the different components of differential diagnosis in a systematic manner. Then, the author discusses the elements needed to arrive at correct diagnoses. The book reviews applicable DSM-5-TR criteria for each diagnosis considered. It presents disorders in a way that follows the lifespan approach used in the DSM-5-TR. Each decision tree includes decision-making algorithms that assist the clinician in arriving at the correct diagnosis. This section of the book breaks down the decision trees into 18 types of disorders. The book includes an appendix of the DSM-5-TR Classifications, an alphabetical index of the decision trees, and an alphabetical index of the differential diagnosis tables. |
Assessment
Although the DSM-5-TR provides clinicians with diagnostic criteria, statistics, and background on the various mental health disorders, it does not guide the clinician through the differential diagnosis process. This book fills that need. While other books in the field may contain elements of this approach, no other text addresses the DSM-5-TR as completely as this. |
