At A Glance
Respiratory physiology involves a number of areas, all of which are complex. These areas include the structure and function of the lung, the mechanics of breathing, gas exchange within the lung, oxygen uptake/transport and delivery, control of carbon dioxide and ventilation. Both pathologies of the lung itself as well as other disorders (cardiac disease, neurological disease, haematological disease, musculoskeletal disorders etc) have varying effects on the different aspects of pulmonary physiology. In addition, advanced respiratory treatments such as mechanical ventilation may also have effects on all of these. Respiratory terminology encompasses both anatomical and physiological descriptors, as well as terms used in investigations and respiratory management. For the non-pulmonologist or intensivist, much of this terminology may be confusing. Many of the terms sound similar and may seem to be used interchangeably.

Description
The book covers a wide variety of topics related to the respiratory system during pregnancy. It provides an excellent foundational review of physiology and medical basics. It also contains a number of tables that highlight important points and medication dosages. Lastly, it describes the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of the most common diseases encountered during pregnancy. |
Purpose
The purpose is to serve as reference for both obstetricians and non-obstetricians involved in the care of pregnant women with respiratory disorders. The list of contributing authors reflects the audience, comprised of both OB-GYNs and physicians in other specialties. The book meets its goals, although it is more thorough in physiology than clinical management. |
Audience
The book is written for physicians, both obstetricians and non-obstetricians. For the obstetricians, it is most helpful as an overview of disease management. For non-obstetricians, it provides a good reminder of how the physiology of pregnant women is quite different from that of non-pregnant adults. Given its strong foundational information, it would also serve medical students very well. The authors bring together a strong group of contributors to serve the audience. |
Features
The book covers the physiology of pregnancy very well. It also spends time explaining medical basics like the various ways to deliver supplemental oxygen, for example. Infections, pre-existing medical conditions, and acute events related to the respiratory system in pregnancy are reviewed in well-organized chapters. Acute chest syndrome from sickle cell disease is especially well done, as is the chapter on sleep-disordered breathing. The smoking in pregnancy chapter could have been more thorough. Overall, the book is quite timely given the current COVID-19 pandemic. |
Assessment
The book is well written and easy to read. It provides excellent foundational knowledge. The clinical management is inadequate to manage complex patients, but the book certainly provides helpful information. For the obstetrician, it is a great resource to facilitate more educated exchanges with consultants. For non-obstetricians consulted on obstetric patients, it provides a nice review of how pregnant women are different from non-pregnant adults. There are not many books dedicated to just the respiratory system, which makes it more valuable to healthcare providers looking for this specific type of information. |
