Description
This concise but comprehensive handbook of clinical infectious diseases incorporates updates and new developments in clinical practice guidelines since the first edition was published in 2013. This edition also includes an ebook download, but it was not available at the time of this review. |
Purpose
The book was developed from the experience of the authors teaching infectious disease at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Their goal was to present current basic science and clinical concepts for each major infectious disease topic in a clear outline format. Written as a synoptic account for each topic, the book provides a means of teaching the basic concepts of infectious diseases that will be more palatable to students. |
Audience
The main audience is students and medical providers in training. Clinicians and those attending on clinical infectious disease services will find this a useful reference and teaching resource. It provides basic concepts to understand the diagnostic evaluation as well as the process of caring for patients with an infection. |
Features
Written in an outline format with short, focused chapters, the book presents a systematic method for teaching and understanding basic concepts, establishing a diagnosis, and initiating appropriate medical and surgical treatment of commonly encountered infectious diseases. There is a standard pattern of description that defines the topic; provides an introduction to classification, pathophysiology, and epidemiological information; lists causative microorganisms; and describes the clinical aspects and approach to history taking, physical examination, laboratory methods, diagnostic imaging, and appropriate antimicrobial therapy. The publisher website noted that the ebook was "COMING SOON!" The reported ebook features are the ability to highlight, take notes, and search in the book, as well as page numbers that match the print version. |
Assessment
This second edition should continue to be popular among teachers and students alike, reflecting the clear and practical synoptic outline of the process of clinical problem solving for each infectious disease topic. It continues to provide the essential aspects of infectious diseases and includes new chapters on clinical reasoning and statistics, antimicrobial stewardship, and a basic approach to travel medicine, which readers will find useful. The ebook will enhance its value, through accessibility, portability, and searchability. |
