Description
This is a comprehensive review of vaccine preventable diseases, vaccine science, and licensed vaccine products. It also addresses new developments, product technologies, and global regulatory and public health issues. This edition includes access to an ebook version. The previous edition was published in 2013. |
Purpose
The editors and authors have extensive expertise in immunization practice and research. This edition continues to serve as a comprehensive and needed "bible" on vaccine prevention of targeted infectious and other diseases. The availability in both print and online format adds to accessibility for the wide range of practitioners and students who will benefit from this book. |
Audience
This authoritative resource is an important addition to the library of practitioners, specialists, and researchers who have a strong focus on immunizations. Its cost and in-depth coverage may deter purchase by other practitioners and most students. Given these constraints, availability through medical libraries in print and online versions should assure access for most healthcare providers serving children and/or adults, virtually all of whom have immunization indications. |
Features
The book provides important background on vaccine preventable diseases, clinical descriptions, epidemiology, and significant public health challenges. Vaccine history, development, current U.S. and global products in use, their efficacy and safety, and overall impact are presented clearly and thoroughly. The book addresses the needs of immune compromised groups, healthcare personnel, and travelers, but is somewhat limited in its coverage of other special populations. A chapter on those with other high risk conditions indicating vaccination would be a valuable addition. Color art in figures and tables enhance the narrative, and is especially valuable in chapter 68, which depicts developing product technology aimed at improved vaccine delivery. Global efforts expanding vaccine access and infrastructure will be of interest to all who recognize that vaccine preventable diseases are "only a plane ride away." Chapters have been reorganized and updated extensively, with additional information on "Correlates of Protection" and "Maternal Immunization," and new coverage of Zoster, Norovirus, Meningitis B, Ebola, and Zika. |
Assessment
This edition has added important content and provided a thorough update of other chapters. Recognizing the unavoidable constraints of lag time from final writing to publication, it is exceptionally up to date. The availability of both a print and online version substantially expands its accessibility. In their preface, the editors stated their hope that "it will be read by all those, young and old, who recognize the value of vaccines." Readers will find the content informative and fascinating! This book continues to deserve recognition as a "bible" in this area. |
