Description
This comprehensive book describes the key concepts of travel health and the risks of infectious diseases associated with travel. |
Purpose
The aim is to provide a clear, up-to-date, complete understanding of destination-specific risks of infectious diseases. |
Audience
This book would be of interest to, and a great resource for, a broad audience, including infectious diseases physicians, internists, travel health providers residents, public health experts, nurses, and others involved in caring for travelers. |
Features
The initial chapters describe the concepts of pretravel consultation and discuss in detail both common and rare travel-related infectious diseases. The remainder of the book focuses mainly on the risks of travel-related infections in immunocompromised hosts, family travel, and healthcare abroad, as well as popular itineraries. It also discusses the art of counselling patients about specific travel-related risks and describes all the commonly used travel vaccines and prophylactic antibiotics to prevent those diseases. Color-coded maps clearly illustrate the risk of infectious disease in each part of a given country. Tables depict drug interactions and vaccine considerations in immunocompromised hosts. There is also a chapter on environmental hazards, noninfectious diseases risks, and healthcare abroad. |
Assessment
This is a very well-written book that provides a great explanation of the core principles of travel medicine. This edition includes updated recommendations on some of the vaccines, such as the yellow fever vaccine. An understanding of the concepts in this book serves the needs of clinicians who aim to conquer the outbreaks of infectious diseases associated with travel. |
