Description
This is a classic compact textbook of surgery which emphasizes practical information and concise readability. The previous edition was published in 2020 and rapid advances in the field amply justify a new edition. This updated edition substantially revised many chapters and adds numerous new chapters. |
Purpose
This book is a concise reference source primarily for students and residents. The book emphasizes practical information throughout. Its mission is to serve as an introductory text for trainees, and as a ready reference for practicing surgeons and for those who refer patients for surgical procedures. |
Audience
This book's primary audience is trainees in the field of general surgery and as previously noted, it will amply meet the needs of this intended audience. The authors are all highly credible authorities in their fields. The editor has shepherded the book through several revisions, remaining true to the original authors of the first edition (which was a classic in the field). A compact text will, of course, not cover everything in detail. This is a virtue, rather than a fault, because the editor has been careful to include the most pertinent and high-value information for the intended readers. |
Features
The book comprises 50 chapters. It begins with general topics such as preoperative and postoperative care and then segues into specific organs and surgical subspecialties (such as GYN surgery). Chapters on "Operating Room Safety" and "Power Sources in Surgery" are particularly noteworthy. The book presents information throughout in algorithmic format, and the text is replete with tables, carefully chosen illustrations, and bullet points. Each chapter includes boxed references. Carefully written multiple choice questions allow for testing and consolidating knowledge. |
Assessment
This is an excellent revision of a high-quality book. Rapid changes in the field amply justify this careful revision. It is highly recommended for students and residents in general surgery and will be of use to practitioners as well. |
