| This is the ninth edition of the most comprehensive textbook of neuropathology, covering surgical neoplastic and non-neoplastic disease and the full range of autopsy pathology. The previous edition was published in 2008. |

Purpose
|
| This two-volume set aims to be a reference and practical guidebook with reliable and updated information on all aspects of diseases involving the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as skeletal muscle. It also describes the normal development and ageing of the nervous system. |

Audience
|
| The audience is practicing neuropathologists and pathology residents, but the material is accessible and useful for other pathologists seeking in-depth knowledge of diseases of the nervous system. It is an invaluable resource for others as well, particularly clinical neuroscientists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and oncologists. |

Features
|
| The two volumes describe the general features of nervous system pathology and the details of all major categories of disease including pathogenesis and neuropathological changes. Many topics have been reorganized in this edition. Vascular disease, hypoxia, and related conditions are now merged into a single chapter. The chapter on perinatal disorders has been rewritten. Chapters on malformations, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases of childhood include expanded tables. Trauma covers all the basics and includes updates on chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Neurodegenerative diseases are covered in separate chapters on extrapyramidal disease, ataxic disorders, motor neuron disorders, normal ageing of the brain, and dementias (with an expanded section on vascular dementia). Other chapters cover epilepsy, psychiatric, demyelinating, and infectious diseases. Tumors have been divided into 21 chapters. The result of these changes is that the number of chapters has increased from 24 in the previous edition to 46. The references are fairly inclusive, but the authors recognize that detailed molecular genetic information is best accessed through online resources. |

Assessment
|
| This book remains an essential resource. With this extensive revision, the overall organization has been improved, while the attention to detail has been maintained. The objective of relating clinical features, biochemistry, molecular genetics, and neuroimaging to structural changes is consistently achieved. The descriptions are lucid and straightforward. Illustrations are important in any pathology book, and here they are superb, with high-quality photographs of both gross and microscopic pathology. Many new figures appear in this edition, including detailed but uncluttered schematic diagrams, flow charts, and tables. Radiologic images, also critical, are of good quality. Both volumes now contain full indexes to the entire contents. Every neuropathologist needs to have Greenfield's Neuropathology at hand for constant reference. This is also recommended for specialists or residents interested in learning about any disease of the nervous system. |
