![](/DCT/images/spacer.gif) |

![](/DCT/images/spacer.gif) |
Audience
|
Readers of all degrees of experience and sophistication will benefit from this encyclopedia of injury care. While this can be seen as a summary for trainees preparing for board examinations and senior staff surgeons reviewing treatment strategies, the quality of writing is such that even younger providers will appreciate the concepts presented. |

Features
|
A section termed Trauma Overview opens the book, which includes discussions of kinematics, epidemiology, prevention, trauma systems, prehospital care, and problems specific to the rural setting. A second group of chapters describes the time in the emergency department with particular emphasis on early management of the ABCs. Among topics of individual chapters are management of shock, coagulopathy of trauma, the use of radiology, management of pain, and mental status changes in the setting of injury and common infections. The largest group of chapters describe care for specific injuries. A head-to-toe approach begins with injuries to the neck and larynx, proceeding through spine, thoracic, abdominal, and orthopedic trauma. Special patient groups discussed include the pregnant individual and the victim of social violence. Individual chapters describe the special needs of the pediatric and geriatric patient. Concluding presentations feature special problems including burns, trauma care of the combat casualty, organ donation, and rehabilitation. An important final group of chapters describes critical care in the setting of injury with specific chapters covering cardiopulmonary insufficiency, gut failure, renal compromise, nutrition support, and multiorgan dysfunction. A beautiful multicolor Atlas of Trauma at the end of the chapters includes surgical approaches to vascular injury, torso insults, and acute compromise of the head and neck. These illustrations are clearly drawn with excellent legends. The subject index provides individual citations for figures and tables. |

Assessment
|
This ninth edition remains, along with its predecessors, the best summary of injury care produced in recent decades. Consistent quality reflects the commitment of the three lead authors who have helmed the book throughout the nine editions. New contributors and junior authors have been added. References date to within three years of publication, reflecting the currency of this edition. Evolution in the authors of various chapters leads to some repetition, but this should not deter readers. Text, tables, and varied illustrations are excellent. Trauma remains the leader in this field. |
