Description
This graphic public health book is both educative and scholarly. It analyzes public health topics of current interest through the use of graphics as a conduit to explaining these timely topics to a public audience while also being educative for healthcare students and providers. The author uses real-life examples from the Seattle metro area, a region I know very well from years of working there. The book provides a well-researched and balanced approach.

Purpose
The purpose of the book is to look at the scholarship of comics and graphic medicine as a new and emerging field in public health care. The objectives are clear in stating this and the scholarship of this form of literature is definitely needed and cutting edge.

Audience
The author takes up topics of interest to all ages and diverse population groups, presenting the topics and the messages in a compassionate manner. She stresses the social determinants of health as causative, avoiding blaming the victims and vulnerable persons in these situations. The target audiences include the general public as well as students of public health and the healthcare professions, their educators, and healthcare providers.

Features
This short book examines how graphic comics visualize illnesses, the impact on the health of the population, the social determinants of health that drive these illnesses, and practical ways in which the public can participate in solutions. The exemplar comics drive home the messages about each of the selected topics.

Assessment
I would highly recommend this book to public health departments, primary care settings, education settings from high school through university, and psychological service personnel working with persons with the situations portrayed. I hope we will see more of this format of health education in the future.
