Description
This second edition of a book on health-system pharmacy practice comes with significant changes from the first edition, including a new title, a change in focus to include basic aspects of ambulatory care pharmacy, and the addition of two new chapters. The previous edition was published in 2010. |
Purpose
The overarching purpose is to introduce a new audience of pharmacy students or new practitioners to health-system pharmacy practice through easy-to-read chapters and learning tools. This edition has an added focus on the importance of ambulatory care pharmacy practice within a health system, as supported by the national organization, ASHP. These are worthy objectives for two reasons: many pharmacy students are primarily exposed to community pharmacy and are not aware of the opportunities for pharmacists in this setting; and 2) as we wait patiently for provider status, the growing interest in and need for pharmacists in ambulatory care settings requires careful planning and multidisciplinary support and advocacy. For the most part, the book meets these objectives. |
Audience
The intended audience is pharmacy students, educators, pharmacy technicians, and new pharmacy graduates. The content and learning objectives were developed with this audience in mind. Some chapters may be useful for hospital introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPEs). This book may also provide valuable insights for students or new graduates who seek community pharmacy careers, but are curious about health-system pharmacy practice and the potential partnerships between the two settings. An educator could use this book in an introductory course on hospital pharmacy practice, including financial and regulatory considerations, distribution versus cognitive services, and possible education requirements for employment in various areas. I could also be helpful in a pharmacy technician course, especially given the chapter formatting, including key terms, definitions, and end-of-chapter review questions. The author and contributors range from pharmacy practitioners and educators to administrators and those in regulatory affairs, medication safety, and informatics. |

Features
The 20 chapters are grouped into eight sections. The introduction reviews acute and ambulatory care settings within a health system, as well as a history of hospital pharmacy and legal/regulatory issues of concern. Subsequent sections consider medication management, medication distribution, technology, financial management with a health system, sterile product preparation and administration, and leadership and recruitment. The final section addresses how to prepare for health-system careers for both pharmacy practitioners and technicians. The two new chapters cover career opportunities for pharmacy technicians and sustainability of ambulatory care practice settings. The chapter on clinical pharmacy provides a thorough overview of not just clinical "cognitive" activities, but also the importance of blending distributive functions with clinical pharmacy functions. It also highlights possible postgraduate training options and certifications available to students or new graduates to open doors for future opportunities. Each chapter is well organized, starting with measurable learning objectives and a section on key terms and definitions. Within each chapter there are also "key point...and so what?" sections, where a key point is highlighted and is followed by a passage on the relevance or importance of that point as it relates to the chapter's content. Each chapter concludes with additional readings, and chapter review and discussion questions. Where appropriate, chapters contain images, charts, and diagrams. Despite the addition of a chapter on ambulatory care, the book title is a bit of a misnomer, as the main focus of the book remains hospital pharmacy practice. The information on ambulatory care includes concepts like patient-centered medical home and reimbursement barriers, but discussion of other aspects such as medication therapy management and collaborative practice agreements could better explain the exciting possibilities for pharmacists in this setting, not necessarily connected to an outpatient hospital dispensing pharmacy. |

Assessment
As a comprehensive introduction to hospital and health-system pharmacy practice, this book would be useful for an introductory course on hospital practice for IPPE programs or pharmacy technician courses or, perhaps, in interprofessional activities to expose other disciplines to the roles of pharmacists in this setting. The second edition addresses a fresh audience and introduces readers to novel and innovative practice settings in the health system. |
