Description
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the largest group of nutrition professionals in the United States, has published the first edition of this book. Written by a dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist (formerly known as a CDE) and endocrinologist, this resource is a departure from previous publications. The book does include some evidence-based information, but it also includes a large amount of lesser-known recommendations from functional medicine. While it is a primer for healthcare professionals regarding thyroid disease, it gives a broader view of many types of treatment in addition to conventional medicine.
Purpose
According to the book, the goal is to provide additional information about treating thyroid disease. As the author states, "once the patient has 'tried everything' and still does not feel right," the book is meant to help readers determine additional options. Since far too many people rely on the internet and take advice from questionable sources, this book gives a combination of evidence-based with integrative and functional medicine options.
Audience
The book is written for healthcare professionals: physicians, dietitians, and other allied health professionals. It is not meant for students. I see this being useful in endocrinology practices, chiropractic offices, and for natural medicine professionals. The author appears to be a credible authority on this subject. However, she noted to "keep an open mind," highlighting that the information presented may not be 100% evidence-based and may be some of her own opinion and experience.
Features
While there are many books about thyroid disease, this is the first that integrates pathophysiology, medical treatment, and nutrition recommendations. In the past, the only interaction a dietitian would have with someone about their thyroid would be to discuss a low iodine diet, especially before a radioactive iodine scan. This book goes beyond that, highlighting the role of nutrition in all aspects of thyroid disease. The guide includes a large number of text boxes, tables, and figures and is divided into sections introducing the different thyroid disorders and the different treatment modalities for each. The guide also includes seven appendixes, including drugs/foods/supplements/conditions affecting thyroid medication absorption. As the author states, the book also includes a set of recommendations "subject to change" since many do not have an abundance of research. The book is geared toward patient-centered care, giving all possible options and their risks and benefits for patients to decide for themselves their treatment path. The chapter about hyperthyroidism includes a very comprehensive discussion regarding symptoms, medication treatment, lab values, and medical nutrition therapy (MNT) in conjunction with the medical management. It also includes a brief overview of the supplements used in place of medications. There was a nice discussion in one chapter regarding weight management and diet factors (high fiber, tracking food intake) and physical activity needs. The chapters are short, giving the key information needed and relying on the tables, boxes, and figures to consolidate the information for easy access.
Assessment
This book could be a useful resource for health professionals who work with a large number of thyroid patients and wish to explore complementary treatment options for their thyroid condition. It is not meant for students.
